CAMOOWEAL North West QLD
~ Droving Centre of Australia ~
Monday 10th of October 2005
Camooweal would have to be my favourite town on the way to Alice Springs. I don't really understand why I like the place so much but I really do!
Out near the lake.
Things to see in Camooweal
The Local Museum: Run by a man who has a great deal of history in the place...it is amazing. He also owns the local shop next door.
(He shuts the local shop next door and charges $5 to take you through the museum)
Back in the day in Camooweal the head drover (those who move cattle from place to place), got six other helper drovers and was in charge of 1500 head of stock. Their job was to move X amount of stock here and there in x amount of time.
(the only fact I was able to memorise from the museum...there is so much to take in!)
Out near the lake!
The Caves: The only reason most people would visit Camooweal is because the whole town is built on top of many many caves...all natural ones!
The only way you can go into them is through booking previously in Mt Isa...apparently you need to be an experienced absailer also. That counts me out!
You guessed it ... Out near the lake!!
The LAKE: My favourite, I really liked the animals, photo opportunities and time with my dad.
At the lake!!
THE VIBE: It's the Museum, Its the local shop, Its the two relaxing caravan parks, Its the sound of aboriginal kids playing at night on the street, its the sound of dingoes howling, Its the roosters crowing, Its the road trains passing, its the lake, its the wildlife, its the hotel, its the vibe...
NAH....Its just the VIBE!
